The battle for the heart of the US Democratic Party is on, as Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren challenge the status quo by promoting radical policy programs such as a "Medicare for All" system and an energy transition from fossil fuels to renewables.

Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is preparing to enter the presidential race to become the Democratic candidate in the 2020 presidential election, US media reported.

On Friday, Bloomberg filed paperwork to qualify for the presidential primary in Alabama, which has the earliest deadline of any state. He has still not announced his candidacy, Vox reported.

Elizabeth Warren repeatedly came under attack during Oct. 15's Democratic presidential debate as rivals accused the Massachusetts senator of ducking questions about the cost of Medicare for All and her signature "wealth tax" plan in an attempt to derail her rising campaign.

Democratic presidential hopefuls honed their attack lines hours before July 30's high-stakes debate, with leading liberals Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders expected to battle over who will be a torchbearer for the party's progressive wing.

Former US President Barack Obama will reportedly receive $1.2 million for a series of speeches he will make next week to large Wall Street firms.
