Restoration of 19th-century Nafplio church under way
The restoration of Agios Nikolaos Church in Nafplio began on Saturday. The church was built in 1713, more than a century before Greeks won independence from Ottoman Turkey and appointed Nafplio the first capital of the modern Greek state. Three-dimensional laser scanning technology is being used on the church's ceiling.
Catamaran Cup under way in Nafplio
Catamarans are lined up in the harbor at Nafplio, in the northeastern Peloponnese, on Wednesday, at the end of day five of the 10th Catamaran Cup. Launched by Istion Yachting in 2010, the event has become one of the most popular on the regatta calendar, drawing entries from 18 countries. The race, which takes place in the Saronic and Argolic gulfs, ends on Saturday.

Flamingo migration gathering pace
A flock of flamingos prepares to take flight over the Nea Kios coastal wetland near the port of Nafplio, in the Peloponnese, yesterday. Conservation groups and residents have reported an increase in sightings of flamingos in the Argolida area, and particularly around the wetland, as the birds prepare to migrate south for the winter.

Swimmers rescue turtle stuck in fishing net
Swimmers in Nafplio on Friday rescued a sea turtle that had become entangled in a fishing net. The animal was spotted by a swimmer who brought it to shore and freed it from the netting with the help of other beachgoers before releasing it back into the sea. Downpours wreak damage across the country
The area of Timenio, near Argos in the Peloponnese, remained largely flooded on Wednesday following protracted heavy rainfall that has submerged hundreds of hectares of farmland across the country. Messinia and Ilia were badly hit by flooding, as was the plain of Philippi near Kavala, in northern Greece. Meanwhile landslides were reported in Viotia, Chios, Lesvos, Kos and Arachova.

Pilgrims celebrate the Dormition of the Theotokos
Believers light candles at the Byzantine Church of Aghia Triada in Nafplio, southern Greece, ahead of Wednesday's celebration of the Dormition (or the Assumption) of the Virgin Mary (in Greek: Koimisis tis Theotokou). The holiday commemorates the "falling asleep" or death of the Theotokos (Mary, translated as "God-bearer").
