Fazıl Say raises awareness about pollution in concert

Turkey's internationally acclaimed pianist Fazıl Say gave a free concert on the banks of Munzur River in the eastern province of Tunceli, formerly known as Dersim, to raise awareness about Munzur River and environmental pollution.

Thousands of people from various parts of Turkey viewed the concert, accompanied by mezzo-soprano Serenad Bağcan.

Veteran composer Muammer Sun dies at 89

Professor Muammer Sun, a doyen composer and educator who made several contributions to the development of Contemporary Polyphonic Turkish Music, passed away on Jan. 16 at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine Hospital due to multiple organ failure. He was 89.

He was taken to the hospital on the night of Jan. 15 for his treatment.

Turkish musician to be permanent at Berlin Philharmonic

Young Turkish-born violinist Hande Küden successfully completed her probation period at the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, known as Berliner Philharmoniker, on Dec. 7.

"I dreamed of playing with the Berliner Philharmoniker when I was 13, and now my dream has come true," said Küden, according to the orchestra's website.

The London Philharmonic Orchestra comes to the Athens Concert Hall on Thursday, December 13, with Sir Roger Norrington conducting a rare live performance of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, as well as his Leonore Overture. Turkish pianist Fazil Say will also be on stage on the night, performing Saint-Saens's Piano Concerto No 2. The concert starts at 8.30 p.m. and tickets cost 22-80 euros.
