A 33-year-old Turkish man was remanded in pretrial custody on Tuesday by a court in Alexandroupoli, northern Greece, over the death of a 57-year-old farmer he ran over with his car last week.

Greek Police and the foreign ministry are in a state of alert after a Greek policeman on trip to the city of Edirne was arrested.

The 41-year-old police sergeant is serving in the Feres police precinct in the Greek-Turkish border area of Evros and hails from the village of Antheia.

Sources say the policemen has been arrested, possibly by the Turkish gendarmerie.

Greek Police (ELAS) has decided to send an additional 14 riot police units at the country's northeastern border with Turkey, to assist the existing police force and army, Kathimerini understands.
