A senior Turkish diplomat, Feridun Sinirlioğlu, has been appointed as the secretary-general of the Organization of Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) with the votes of all 57 member states, becoming the first Turkish national taking the helm of the prestigious organization.

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan attended the OSCE summit in Malta where growing security issues in Europe and the Middle East were the focal point of the 57-nation security and cooperation organization.

The ministerial council of the OSCE was launched in Valetta on Dec. 5, with the participation of dozens of foreign ministers, including the United States, Türkiye, Russia and others.

Türkiye and Greece have jointly nominated candidates for two positions within the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), signaling a thaw in their historically fraught relations.

With the completion of the restoration works, the Maiden's Tower was opened to visitors late on May 11 with light and laser shows, and entries will be free until the end of May.

Feridun Sinirlioğlu, a senior Turkish diplomat who previously served as Türkiye's permanent representative at the U.N., has now been appointed as U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres's special coordinator for Afghanistan.

Istanbul has not been able to see the Maiden's Tower, one of the landmarks that complete its silhouette, for a while.

Last November, a pier was built around it, and it was covered with a curtain that reads "The Maiden's Tower opens its eyes again," with the logo of the Culture and Tourism Ministry on it.

Turkey's Permanent Representative to the United Nations said on Oct. 28 that his country will not be lectured by those violating human rights and humanitarian laws. 

Feridun Sinirlioğlu was responding to his Chinese counterpart Geng Shuang, China's deputy permanent representative to the U.N., who called on Ankara to comply with international humanitarian law in Syria.
