A white Cleveland police officer who climbed onto the hood of a car and fired dozens of rounds at an unarmed black couple in 2012 was acquitted of voluntary manslaughter May 23.

A grand jury indicted six Baltimore police officers May 21 over the death of African-American Freddie Gray in their custody last month, a state attorney said.    

Baltimore lifted a curfew May 3 that was imposed across the US East Coast city following widespread riots, as thousands of National Guard troops began to pull out.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio denied that the city had toughened its policing strategy in response to the riots in Baltimore after some lawmakers accused the city's police force of overly aggressive tactics in its handling of protests on April 29 at night.

Protesters marched against police violence in cities from New York to Denver on April 29, and a large demonstration in Baltimore ended peacefully two days after rioting over the death of a black man injured in police custody.

Upon the Monday night protests a number of private and business properties have been looted, police cars set on fire and several police officers have suffered severe injuries, as reported by the BBC.

Rioters plunged part of Baltimore into chaos April 27, torching a pharmacy, setting police cars ablaze and throwing bricks at officers hours after thousands mourned the man who died from a severe spinal injury he suffered in police custody.
