Abstract Evolution | Athens | To September 15
Sculptures and paintings by 26 eminent artists including Yannis Gaitis, George Zongolopoulos, Vlassis Caniaris, Costas Tsoclis and others illustrate the evolution of the abstract in Greek art from the 1950s to the 1960s at the Alex Mylona Museum. "Untitled: Greek Post-War Abstraction: The Heroic Years" showcases how the genre developed in Greece after the end of the Civil War.

A statue yearning to move
The Pentacycle sculpture by acclaimed artist George Zongolopoulos, who died in 2004, has been standing motionless, apart from a few occasions, ever since it was installed in Omonia Square, central Athens in 2001. The purpose of the hydro-kinetic sculpture was to give viewers the perception of constant movement with the help of water.

City of Thessaloniki gets its moon back
It first appeared on the Thessaloniki waterfront in 1995 during the northern port city's Dimitria cultural festival, in the location now occupied by George Zongolopoulos's iconic Umbrellas sculpture.

A meeting of the ancient and modern
The archaeological site of ancient Messene in southern Greece will be hosting 22 bronze, iron and stainless steel sculptures by Greek artists Giorgos Houliaras and George Zongolopoulos from July 14 until the end of September. The exhibition, titled 'Zongolopoulos-Houliaras-Messana,' is an initiative of the site's chief excavator, Petros Themelis.

Zongolopoulos's 'Umbrellas' fly to Egypt
"Umbrellas," an emblematic installation series by Greek sculptor George Zongolopoulos (1903-2004), was installed a few days ago in Egypt, some 120 kilometers outside Alexandria, in an area where a new city is being built. The city will include a "Greek Village" inspired by the Aegean holiday island of Santorini.
