A couple of vultures (skares in the local dialect) glide low overhead, accompanied by the eerie howl of a fierce wind, greeting me with an unsettling welcome as I arrive in Temenia in the White Mountains. The vine leaves of the ancient, pre-phylloxera vineyard shimmer in vibrant green, clinging to the first delicate shoots that sway restlessly in the breeze.
Rescue operation for injured American tourist on Crete
A rescue operation is underway for a 60-year-old American tourist injured while hiking near Sougia on the southern coast of Crete on Tuesday evening.
The man was hiking with others toward the Lissos archaeological site when he lost his balance and injured his limbs, according to public broadcaster ERT.
Fire near hotels in Crete prompts evacuation alert
A large fire is burning grassland near hotels in Platanias, Hania, on the island of Crete, prompting an emergency evacuation alert.
The blaze, which started in reed beds, has led to the deployment of 29 firefighters, 11 vehicles and three helicopters. Assistance from other Cretan regions includes forest ground teams and water tanks.

Crete: American, 30, dies after falling from rooftop
Police in Crete are investigating the death of a 30-year-old American citizen, who suffered fatal injuries when he fell from the roof of the accommodation he was staying in Hania's Old Town.
The man was in Hania for business reasons.
Local media said the man was a soldier.
Police have ruled out the possibility of criminal activity, according to state broadcaster ERT.
Three boats carrying 76 migrants land on Gavdos in one day
A total of 76 irregular migrants from Syria, Egypt, Sudan and Bangladesh traveling in three separate boats landed on the shores of Gavdos, a tiny island south of Crete, in the early hours of Tuesday.
The passengers of the vessels, which included six children and four women, were helped to reach dry land by local fishermen, according to reports.
Fifty-one migrants rescued south of Crete
Some 51 migrants were rescued 33 miles southwest of the Cretan island of Gavdos on Friday afternoon.
The 51 migrants issued a distress call shortly after noon and, according to the coast guard, were picked up by a Liberian-flagged tanker.
The tanker is expected to transport the migrants to Hania, where port authorities will take charge of them.

Authorities in Attica have urged farmers and the public to be on the lookout for an invasive pest that has eaten through billions of pounds of crops in Africa and Australia.
Commonly known as the fall armyworm, the Spodoptera frugiperda has already been spotted in the regional units of Laconia, Iraklio, Lasithi, Eastern Attica, Evia, Lesvos and Hania.

Greece marks anniversary of its deadliest train crash
Relatives of the 57 victims of Greece's deadliest train crash attended a memorial service to mark the anniversary, in Tempe, central Greece on Wednesday. Relatives left flowers at the fence alongside the tracks where the collision occurred, with the names and photos of the victims.
