Hospitals in Sofia are facing a crisis as they turn away emergency patients due to a severe shortage of intensive care unit (ICU) beds. The alarming issue came to light during a forum discussing the challenges within Bulgaria's healthcare system, where a nurse from the Sofia Emergency Service shed light on the dire situation.

The Chairman of the Bulgarian Medical Union, Dr. Ivan Madzharov, expresses his approval for the priorities announced by the new Minister of Health, Prof. Hristo Hinkov - to stop the uncontrolled growth of the healthcare network in the country and to reduce the co-payments made by patients.

"The situation in our country and Europe shows that the pandemic is far from over. I don't know how or why this decision was taken, but there has to be a new structure for managing the coronavirus crisis," said President of the Bulgarian Medical Association Dr Ivan Madzharov commenting on the disbandment of the National Operational Headquarters (NOHQ).

At the current rate of healthcare development, it will take Bulgaria 50 years to catch up with the most developed countries in the European Union, said head of Bulgarian Medical Union Dr. Ivan Madzharov during a press conference at BTA titled "Non-Partisan Consensus for Accelerated Healthcare Development 2021-2025" under "Together for Better Health" initiative
