Europe must become a "global player" with a muscular foreign policy to match its economic strength, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker urged on Sept. 12, in his annual address to the bloc's parliament.

In a state of the union speech before the European Parliament in Strasbourg, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker on Wednesday hailed the "herculean" efforts of the Greek people to overcome the country's financial crisis. 

This was said by European Commission spokeswoman Maja Kocijancic, who added that these policies, "as it is well known, have caused decades of misery and suffering to the Western Balkans and the people there.
