EU foreign policy chief tells Turkey border developments unacceptable

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said he told Turkey on Wednesday that the situation at the border with Greece was unacceptable and Turkey should not encourage further movement of migrants towards the border with EU states.

Speaking after talks with President Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara, he described their meeting as long and profitable.

The European Union's high representative for foreign and security policies, Josep Borrell, has suggested to work with Turkey in addressing common challenges stemming from regional conflicts, as he met with Turkey's defense and interior minister late March 3.

EU’s top diplomat visits Ankara

The EU's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell and crisis management commissioner Janez Lenarcic will pay a two-day visit to Ankara Tuesday for talks with senior Turkish officials on the ongoing escalation in the northwestern Syrian province of Idlib and the humanitarian consequences for the civilian population on the ground, as well as the situation of Syrian refugees in Turkey.

EU: That's the first step

The European External Action Service (EEAS) claims that they consider this announcement as the first step and are looking forward to seeing more details.
"This step could have a positive effect on restoring regional trade and offer an opening for the resumption of the Dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina facilitated by the European Union", it is said in EEAS statement.

In an op-ed published today, Surroi revealed the details of a meeting Borrell had a few weeks ago in Berlin with distinguished European experts, Gazeta Express reports.
At the meeting, Surroi wrote, the Spanish diplomat raised the issue of border adjustment, asking if it would be a good solution for Serbia to take over northern Kosovo.
