Sound of Europe Festival in three cities

The third edition of the Sound of Europe Festival, during which new voices of European music and new musical projects from Türkiye will meet music enthusiasts, will be held on Sept. 14 and 15 in three different cities.

The event will feature more than 50 artists in more than 25 concerts, ranging from rock to pop, jazz to ambient, for free of charge.

Retrial: Triple murderer blames it on alcohol abuse, remembers nothing

Ptuj – A retrial started at the Ptuj District Court on Monday for Silvo Drevenšek, whose December 2021 guilty verdict for triple murder was quashed last month. Drevenšek, who pleaded guilty of murdering his partner and her parents in the first trial, now said that his long-time alcohol problem was to be blamed for what he had done.

Microplastics found in 75% of Slovenian rivers

Ljubljana – To highlight the problem of plastic pollution, over 1400 students in 100 Slovenian schools joined forces with scientists within the EU’s Plastic Pirates project. Over the course of one year, young people helped scientists to sample microplastics in rivers, which contaminated more than three-quarters of the rivers analysed.

Pride Parade highlights epidemic-related setbacks for LGBTIQ+ community

Ljubljana – The LGBTIQ+ community staged the Pride Parade in Ljubljana on Saturday afternoon under the slogan Resist the Oppression as a culmination of a week-long festival, demanding freedom, equality and unconditional respect for human rights of LGBTIQ+ persons. The annual parade was for the first time accompanied by the Balkan Trans Intersex March.

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING: Lampič and Urevc third in team event in Oberstdorf

Oberstdorf – Cross-country skiers Anamarija Lampič and Eva Urevc won bronze in the women’s team event at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf, Germany, on Sunday. The pair fell short of gold by 3.46 seconds. Sweden’s Maja Dahlqvist and Jonna Sundling won the race.

Second place went to Switzerland’s Nadine Fähndrich and Laurien van der Graaff.

Parliamentary body calls for new concept of demographic fund

Ljubljana – After discussing the government’s Demographic Fund bill at the request of the opposition, the parliamentary Commission for Oversight of Public Finances decided on Friday that the concept did not provide a long-term sustainability of pension funding. It thus called on the government to draw up a new, better solution.

United Media planning to expand to Slovenia with news portal

Ljubljana – United Media, the media division of United Group, plans to expand to the Slovenian market this year by setting up a news portal under the N1 brand, which is already active in the region.

The Luxembourg-based United Media has already opened the Adria News subsidiary in Ljubljana under which the N1 Slovenija web portal will operate.

Katja Šaponjić wins French Institute translation prize for comics

Ljubljana – The French Institute in Slovenia has presented its Charles Nodier Award to Katja Šaponjić for her translations of graphic novels and comic strips from French.

The award, recognising best translation of a French book into Slovenian, was first presented in 2018. This time it celebrates the year of comics.
