Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot announced on Monday that her city administration has proclaimed June 28 to be Vidovdan Day and urged its residents to "join in celebrating" the Serbian religious occasion.

In her official proclamation, Lightfoot noted how Chicago "has one of the largest Serbian American communities in the United States".

Authorities in Chicago released police body camera footage on April 15 showing an officer shooting dead a 13-year-old Latino boy as the mayor of America's third-largest city appealed for calm over the "excruciating" video.

The U.S. death toll from the coronavirus eclipsed Italy's for the highest in the world, surpassing 20,000, as Chicago and other cities across the Midwest braced for a potential surge in victims and moved to snuff out smoldering hot spots of contagion before they erupt.
