Lyra McKee

On April 18, during a riot in Derry, the second city of Northern Ireland, a 29-year-old journalist, Lyra McKee, was shot dead, probably by a paramilitary republican. Her funeral brought together politicians from both sides of the political and religious divide which has caused thousands of violent deaths since 1968. At the front of the congregation were the Irish and British prime ministers.

The New IRA militant Irish nationalist group has apologized for the killing of journalist Lyra McKee- its first acknowledgment that one of its members was involved, the Irish News newspaper reported on April 23.

Two men have been arrested in connection with the killing of Northern Irish journalist Lyra McKee during a riot in Londonderry on April 18, police said, as politicians in the divided British region united to condemn the attack.
