Mortars found at school construction site reveal history

The discovery of dozens of pieces of military ammunition during the construction works of a school in Istanbul has revealed that the area once housed an Ottoman-era arsenal and gunpowder factory.

The Istanbul Governor's Office announced on May 3 that security forces destroyed 30 mortars found during the construction of a middle school in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul.

Grave steles found in Saraçhane Archaeological Park

Three grave stele fragments have come to light during the ongoing excavations by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Heritage team in the Saraçhane Archeology Park.

Sharing the details, Mahir Polat, the deputy secretary general of the municipality, said, "We are happy to gain a very special series to the Istanbul Archaeology Museums."

1,500-year-old underground passage discovered in Istanbul

A 1,500-year-old underground passage has come to light during the ongoing excavation works in the remains of Saint Polyeuktos Church in Istanbul's Saraçhane neighborhood, which witnessed destruction during the Latin invasion.

The teams from Istanbul Municipality's Cultural Heritage Department on June 8 last year initiated excavation works in the area where the church lies.

Istanbul to get back iconic artifact from the Netherlands

An inscription that was smuggled abroad years ago despite belonging to a "lost mosque" in Istanbul is on the way back home thanks to initiatives of the city's local authorities.

The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality has purchased the inscription that reportedly belongs to the historic Bozgoca Mosque at an auction held in the Netherlands on Sept. 17 for 4,600 euros.
