Britain joined the U.S.-led air strikes against the Islamic State (IS) group in Syria on Thursday after the British Parliament gave the green light to extending the fight against the jihadist militants.   

British Ambassador to Turkey Richard Moore and Turkish National Police Chief Celalettin Lekesiz have met to discuss support between the two countries on foreign fighters and terrorist threats.

Tweeting about the meeting, Moore said Lekesiz had offered "strong support" in combatting foreign fighters and also the exchange of information on terrorist threats. 

One of Turkey's most prominent allies, the United Kingdom, has underlined NATO should play a key role in providing further measures of assurance to Turkey in the face of regional challenges, especially in regard to the deepening Syrian crisis.  

NATO and its allies will open their biggest military exercise in more than a decade on Oct. 19 in a show of strength in the central Mediterranean that takes place as Russia seeks to reassert itself across the water in the Levant. 

The current ceasefire in the war in eastern Ukraine, the so-called Minsk-2 agreement, was signed last February, but they never actually ceased firing. At least a thousand more people have been killed in the fighting since then, and on one night last month (Aug. 14) the monitors of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) recorded 175 separate ceasefire violations.

Russia faced mounting calls on Sept.24 to explain its intentions in the Syrian conflict as European diplomats met after Germany's leader said President Bashar al-Assad should be involved in any peace talks.

Britain will extend its air campaign in Iraq against Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants by a year, Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said on August 4, saying it would use ageing Tornado fighter jets to conduct strikes until at least early 2017. 

Britain says Islamist militants may launch further attacks on tourist resorts in Tunisia after a gunman killed 39 people, including at least 15 Britons, in the worst assault of its kind in modern Tunisian history.
