Turkish prosecutor seeks up to 10.5 years jail term for online chief of daily Cumhuriyet over terror charges

The Istanbul Public Prosecutor's Office on June 8 filed an indictment against the online chief of daily Cumhuriyet, who had been arrested on terror charges after the daily's reporting on the death of a prosecutor, seeking up to 10.5 years of jail time on the same charge, state-run Anadolu Agency has reported.

Everybody agrees that the initial headline written was grossly erroneous. The website manager of the paper noticed the problem in the headline written by a web editor and removed it in 55 seconds. 

However, even if it was corrected within 55 seconds, it resulted in the chief web editor of daily Cumhuriyet, Oğuz Güven, being arrested.

The driver and the owner of a truck that crashed into a car carrying a chief public prosecutor and his personal driver, who were both killed, in the western province of Denizli were arrested on May 14, Doğan News Agency has reported.   

Daily Cumhuriyet's web chief detained, triggering criticism

Police detained the chief online editor of daily Cumhuriyet in Istanbul on May 12.

"I am being detained," Cumhuriyet.com.tr Editor-in-Chief Oğuz Güven tweeted just after 7 a.m.

State-run Anadolu Agency said Güven was detained over a report regarding the death of a chief public prosecutor in a car accident in the western province of Denizli.

Car accident kills chief public prosecutor in Turkey's west

A chief public prosecutor and his driver were killed in a car accident in the Merkezefendi district of the western province of Denizli on May 10. 

Denizli Chief Public Prosecutor Mustafa Alper, 48, and his driver Muzaffer Akşehirli were killed when a truck laden with excavations crashed into their car on a highway.
