A 19-year-old Turkish talent show contestant is out of a coma and communicating after she was shot in the head in an attack that shocked the country, doctors said on June 23.

Mutlu Kaya was shot while she was at home in Kurdish-majority southeastern Diyarbak?r province in May and had until now been in intensive care in the Diyarbak?r hospital where she is being treated.    

Mutlu Kaya, a 19-year-old who was shot in the head allegedly over her decision to join a singing competition, breathed on her own for two hours when doctors temporarily took her off life support on May 27.

Kaya has been recovering at the intensive care unit of a hospital in southeastern Diyarbak?r province where she has been in an induced coma for more than two days.

The boyfriend of the 19-year-old woman who was recently shot in the head in southeastern Turkey, allegedly over her decision to join a singing contest on TV, has been arrested by police, though he has claimed innocence.
