Turkey consults on post-coup attempt prosecutions with Council of Europe

A delegation from Justice Ministry visited Strasbourg last week in order to brief the Council of Europe about post-coup attempt prosecutions in Turkey, Turkish Ambassador to the Council of Europe Erdoğan İşcan has said.

A working group came together "for consultations to develop compatibility in standards between Turkey and the Council of Europe," İşcan told the Hürriyet Daily News.

Europe more afraid of migrants than terror: rights monitor

Europe is more scared of the migrant influx than of terrorism, a European rights monitor said in a report published on April 19.    
 
In an annual report, Nils Muiznieks, human rights commissioner for the Council of Europe, described 2015 as "a year of fear and insecurity" for the continent.

Istanbul governor defends crackdown on gay pride march

The Istanbul Governor's Office has defended its ban on the LGBTI pride march in Istanbul, amid reactions from the international community against the brutal police crackdown on marchers June 28.

The governorate banned the parade at the eleventh hour on the day of the planned march, despite the fact the event has taken place peacefully in Istanbul since 2003. 

Hungary's border fence plans "ill-advised" - CoE official

Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Muiznieks has criticized Hungary's plans to build a fence along the border with Serbia.

"Hungary’s plan to build a fence to stop migrants is ill-advised. Focus should be on ensuring access to asylum, not impeding it," Muiznieks wrote on his Twitter account.
