Major wildfires under control in country’s west

Firefighting teams managed to extinguish two more wildfires in western Türkiye on Aug. 19, bringing the most severe blazes under control, with over 30 suspects detained in connection with the disasters.

The country witnessed its most severe fires of the season over the weekend, notably in the western province of İzmir, with the majority being subdued by Aug. 18.

Karadağlı takes over State Theaters, Memiş assumes AFAD leadership

Famed actress Tamer Karadağlı assumes the role of general manager at the Turkish State Theaters (DT), while Okay Memiş, the governor of Erzurum, steps into the chairmanship of the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), according to the announcement in the Official Gazette.

İmamoğlu’s election bus attacked with stones in Erzurum

A group attacked Nation Alliance vice presidential candidate and İstanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu's election bus with stones during his rally in the eastern province of Erzurum on May 7, as some of those who attended the rally were injured.

İmamoglu said that a maximum of 300-400 "instigated people" organized the attack, but the police did not interfere with these people.

Another earthquake shakes Turkey’s east, no casualties reported

An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7 occurred in the northeastern province of Erzurum's Köprüköy district on Nov. 22, the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) said.

No casualties or damage have been reported yet due to the shake which occurred the second time in a week in the same location.

5.1-magnitude earthquake jolts Turkey's east

A magnitude-5.1 earthquake struck Turkey's eastern province of Erzurum, the country's disaster authority announced on Nov. 19.

The quake shook Köprüköy district of the province at 3:40 p.m. local time, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).

It occurred at a depth of 6.94 kilometers below the surface, it added.

2 mine workers die after carbon monoxide poisoning in Turkey's Gümüşhane

Two workers have died and four others have been taken to hospital due to carbon monoxide poisoning in a mine in the Black Sea province of Gümüşhane, state-run Anadolu Agency reported early on July 16.  

Gümüşhane Governor Okay Memiş told reporters that the four workers were provided with outpatient treatment at a state hospital in the district of Kelkit.
