US: Trump Pardons Some of His Close Associates in His Last Days as President

US President Donald Trump has pardoned his former campaign manager Paul Manafort, ex-adviser Roger Stone and the father of Mr Trump's son-in-law.

Mr Manafort was convicted in 2018 in an investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 US election.

Mr Trump had previously commuted the prison sentence of Mr Stone, who was convicted of lying to Congress.

July FBI raid on the Virginia home of President Donald Trump's former campaign manager, confirmed on Aug. 9, showed that a federal investigation of possible ties between Trump's campaign and Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election was intensifying.

Federal Bureau of Investigation agents executed a search warrant at one of Paul Manafort's homes, his spokesman Jason Maloni said.

Trump Campaign Chief 'Worked for Montenegrin Independence'

American consultant Paul Manafort has said that he was hired by the Russian tycoon Oleg Deripaska, former owner of Montenegro's KAP aluminum plant and one of the largest investors in the country,  to support Montenegro's independence referendum in 2006 - but Deripaska declined to respond to BIRN's inquiry about the claim.
