Surprise package Lavrio added an even more important scalp to that of AEK, as on Sunday it defeated champion Panathinaikos at home.

Just like AEK a week earlier, the Greens had their unbeaten record shattered at Lavrio, with a 92-82 score, paying for their complacency as they had enjoyed a comfortable lead in the first half.

Basket League leader Peristeri got upset at home to hitherto winless Lavrio on Saturday and is joined at the top of the table by AEK and Iraklis, though these three teams have not played the same number of games. AEK and Panathinaikos remain the teams with a perfect record to date.

Peristeri added another major scalp to its collection this year, as after beating champion Panathinaikos a few weeks ago it defeated Olympiakos too on Wednesday, with the Reds appearing to sink into decay. Meanwhile Panathinaikos thrashed AEK on the road to mathematically clinch the top spot in the regular season with three games left to play.

Archaeologists digging at Ancient Amphipolis in Central Macedonia, northern Greece, are poised to make an “exceptionally important find,” according to Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, who visited the site on Tuesday.

“It is certain that we are looking at an exceptionally important find,” he said after being guided around the Kasta Hill by archaeologist Katerina Peristeri.
