Date of snap elections, next Parliament to be announced on Tuesday

The presidential decree ordering the dissolution of Parliament ahead of early elections in Greece is expected to be posted by Tuesday afternoon in a notice at the House that will also contain the date of the snap polls, expected on July 7, as well as the date when the next Parliament is due to convene.

Tsipras presents SYRIZA’s programme after visit with Pavlopoulos

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras' meeting with President Prokopis Pavlopoulos this afternoon the result of which is the dissolution of Parliament and the proclamation of a general election for 7 July marks the formal start of the electoral campaign.

The prime minister's rationale for calling the snap election is the course of the Greek economy and the need to stabilise it.

Tsipras to ask president on Monday to call July election

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will visit President Prokopis Pavlopoulos Monday at 6:30 p.m. to ask him to dissolve Parliament and call early general elections. 

Tsipras had signaled that he would call snap elections following leftist SYRIZA's resounding defeat to center-right New Democracy in last month's European Parliament and local and regional authority elections.

President attends D-Day anniversary in Portsmouth

Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos joined Queen Elizabeth II, US President Donald Trump, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and other world leaders attending the commemorations for the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings on Southsea Common in Portsmouth on the south coast of England on Wednesday. About 300 veterans participated in the D-Day75 events in Portsmouth and in Normandy yesterday.

Two prominent judicial officials were selected on Friday to replace the outgoing president and prosecutor of the Supreme Court despite intense criticism by legal experts and the political opposition over the legitimacy of the process before a snap election takes place on July 7.
