Eleven year jail time given to park assailant

A man received an 11-year prison sentence for assaulting a psychiatrist with a broken bottle in Istanbul's busy Maçka Park, an incident that caused a wave of nationwide anger in 2020.

Serving in a public hospital as a health professional in the Turkish metropolis, Süleyman Dönmezler was attacked by a passerby while walking with two of his colleagues in Maçka Park last year.

Ankara summons Greek diplomat over border killing

Turkey has summoned the Chargé d'Affairs of the Greece Embassy in Ankara after a Turkish citizen was killed by individuals dressed in plain clothes in a cross-border fire near Meriç River.

Sources from the Turkish Foreign Ministry informed that Greek diplomat Eleni Vakali was summoned to the ministry on Aug. 1.

Turkey to continue with weekend curfews: Erdoğan

Turkey will continue with its weekend curfews to stem the spread of the coronavirus, the country's president announced on April 13, with the next curfew to be imposed on April 18-19.

"As part of the fight against the epidemic, we decided to continue the curfew on weekends as needed in the coming period," Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said following a three-hour virtual Cabinet meeting.

Turkey's Oscar entry 'Ayla'

Turkish director Can Ulkay's feature film "Ayla" will be Turkey's Oscar entry for next year's Oscars. 

According to information made by the Artistic Events Commission (SEK), a selective committee of 17 persons, including the Culture and Tourism Ministry officials and cinema professionals, evaluated 13 films and selected "Ayla" for the 90th Academy Awards to be held on March 4, 2018.
