TÜİK’s latest data raise eyebrows over COVID death counts

The latest data published by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) have raised many eyebrows as the figure officially declared during the COVID-19 pandemic period in 2021 does not match, with the new data revealing 128,000 unexplained deaths, a journalist from the daily Hürriyet has stated.

Prominent cartoonist laid to rest

Renowned Turkish caricaturist Latife Demirci, who lost his life on June 5 at the age of 61, has been laid to rest in Istanbul on June 7, following a funeral service attended by prominent figures of the Turkish media and art worlds.

Demirci, who was known as the "father of many cartoon characters," was drawing caricatures on the front page of the daily Hürriyet.

Hürriyet editor-in-chief Ergin wins Freedom of Speech Award

Daily Hürriyet Editor-in-Chief Sedat Ergin has been awarded German international broadcaster Deutsche Welle's (DW) Freedom of Speech Award, which honors individuals who "exemplify human rights and free speech."

In his initial response, Ergin said he was "honored to receive the prize that stands for preservation of press freedom worldwide."

Freedom of the press in Turkey has been confined to court corridors in 2016, said Sedat Ergin, the editor-in chief of daily Hürriyet, who appeared before an Istanbul court on March 25 on charges of "insulting" the president.

The Bak?rköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office opened the case after investigating a tweet posted on Hürriyet's Twitter account on Sept. 6, 2015.
