The U.S. on Wednesday welcomed a meeting between Turkish and Armenian special representatives at their long-closed border, calling the normalization talks a "positive step in bringing peace and stability to the South Caucasus."

Türkiye and Armenia have agreed to work toward opening a railroad that links the two neighboring countries in line with the regional developments, continuing the normalization process.

Merve Kavakçı, who served as Türkiye's ambassador to Malaysia, has been appointed as a member of the Foreign Policy Advisory Board of the Foreign Ministry, according to a decree published in the official gazette on Aug. 13.

As part of the normalization process between Türkiye and Armenia, the officials of the two countries will meet in September to exchange views on technical issues, the daily Hürriyet reported.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a phone talk with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on July 11, the first of this kind of conversation after several years as the two neighbors aim to end decades-old hostilities.

Turkish and Armenian officials have agreed to open the land border for third country citizens visiting both countries as soon as possible, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said on July 1. 

Türkiye and Armenia will hold the fourth round of meetings for the normalization of ties, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement on June 28.

"The fourth meeting of the Special Representatives for the normalization process between Türkiye and Armenia, Ambassador Serdar Kılıç and Deputy Speaker Ruben Rubinyan, will take place in Vienna on July 1, 2022," read the statement.

The special representatives from Turkey and Armenia will hold their third in-person meeting next week as part of an ongoing mutual bid to establish diplomatic ties between the two neighbors, the Foreign Ministry has said.

Turkey and Armenia held a second round of talks for the normalization of ties on Feb. 24 in Vienna to restore relations between the two neighboring countries.

Turkey's U.S. ambassador congratulated President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris on their inauguration on Jan. 20.
