Giorgos Papandreou recently visited Kusadasi as a guest of Mayor Omer Gunel. During his visit, Mr. Papandreou, accompanied by his delegation, went to the Peace and Friendship Square, where he laid a carnation at the monument dedicated to the former Turkish Foreign Minister, Ismail Cem.

As the international stage thrums with tension from the war in Ukraine, strain in the Balkans, civil wars in Africa and the new tragedy unfolding in the Middle East, Greek-Turkish cooperation and dialogue acquire fresh political dimensions.

George Papandreou, former Prime Minister of Greece, has urged European Union leaders to keep the doors open to Turkey and to continue dialogue with the Turkish government, in an apparent reference to German Chancellor Angela Merkel's calls for the suspension of accession talks with Turkey.
