Assumption celebrated at churches dedicated to Virgin Mary

Ljubljana – Christians are celebrating the Feast of the Assumption on Monday, the most important and one of the oldest Church holidays dedicated to Mary, and a national holiday in Slovenia. Bishops will say Mass at the country’s main pilgrimage sites, as well as at the many churches dedicated to Virgin Mary around the country.

Bishops say Easter brings new beginning, hope and life

Ljubljana/Maribor – Ljubljana Archbishop and Metropolitan Stanislav Zore held an Easter Sunday mass in the Ljubljana Cathedral to note that the resurrection of Jesus Christ is something that brought new hope and life. Masses of the Resurrection of the Lord were held in numerous other churches around the country.

Pahor due in Vatican on Sunday for official visit

Ljubljana – President Borut Pahor will visit the Vatican on 6 and 7 February at the invitation of Pope Francis to mark the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Slovenia and the Holy See.

Announcing the visit, the president’s office said it would provide an opportunity for an exchange of views on relevant issues of current and future times.

Janša receives European bishops and church representatives

Ljubljana – Prime Minister Janez Janša met with representatives of the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the EU (COMECE) and the Conference of European Churches (CEC) on Friday. They discussed the global role of the EU, religious freedom and the ongoing pandemic, said the PM’s office and the Slovenian Bishops’ Conference (SŠK).

Opponents of abortion hold Walk for Life rally in Ljubljana

Ljubljana – A march by opponents of abortion called Walk for Life was held in Ljubljana on Saturday, gathering a few hundred people, including Archbishop of Ljubljana Stanislav Zore, who said the fundamental right to life must not be forgotten. A counter-rally was also held at the same time.

Andrej Saje ordained as new bishop of Novo Mesto

Mirna Peč – The new bishop of Novo Mesto, Andrej Saje was ordained at a ceremony at the parish church of Mirna Peč on Sunday before he formally takes over from Andrej Glavan next week. Addressing the congregation, Saje noted the great responsibility he is assuming, wishing for fruitful cooperation and dialogue with everyone in the diocese.

Ljubljana archbishop urges mutual respect on Assumption Day

Brezje – Marking Assumption of Mary, Archbishop of Ljubljana Stanislav Zore called for open-mindedness, acceptance and mutual respect as he said mass at Brezje on Sunday. The government described Assumption of Mary as a holiday of hope and faith in the fullness of life, wishing everyone peace on this day.

Slovenian Covid-19 victims commemorated by senior officials

Ljubljana – Senior state and religious officials attended a memorial service at Ljubljana’s Žale cemetery on Sunday for people who have died from Covid-19, on the anniversary of the first death recorded in Slovenia. In his keynote, President Borut Pahor express condolences to the victim’s families and said the virus had not been defeated yet.
