Main opposition SYRIZA was plunged into further turmoil at the weekend after its leader, Stefanos Kasselakis, whose tenure at the helm has been challenged by party cadres, took his predecessor, Alexis Tsipras, to task in a social media post late Friday asking for support "without games."

Three members of SYRIZA's political secretariat are urging the main opposition party to join the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D) political group in the European Parliament, stating that the move is a crucial component of a broader strategy aimed at positioning it as the primary representative of the progressive political space in Greece.

Democratic Left (DIMAR) on Tuesday said it was quitting the centrist alliance, Movement for Change (KINAL), following the weekend expulsion of its president Thanasis Theocharopoulos over his support for the Prespes agreement.

"DIMAR will stick to the responsible stand... that it has from the very beginning maintained on this crucial national issue," the party said in a statement.

Fofi Genimata, the leader of the new center-left party, Movement for Change, said on Wednesday that the members of its political council will be announced on Friday.

Kathimerini understands that the council will be small and will include the main proponents for the new party's creation and the candidates that ran for its leadership.

Thanasis Theocharopoulos, leader of the minor Democratic Left (DIMAR) party, has said he will announce next week if he will run for the leadership of Greece's nascent center-left party.

Democratic Left leader Thanasis Theocharopoulos spoke at SKAI TV and said that his party is open for a cooperation with SYRIZA and New Democracy following the elections.

He stated that he is in favor of a coalition government with the participation of both major parties, but he highlighted that the criterion for that cooperation would be “our program”.

Thanasis Theocharopoulos, 36, was elected the new leader of small centre-left party Democratic Left (DIMAR) on Sunday.

DIMAR was part of the previous coalition government between June 2012 and June 2013 but failed to enter Parliament in January?s elections, where it gained just under 0.50 percent of the vote.
