Italy takes to battlements to save its dying hamlets
The streets are silent and cats hunt in abandoned houses, but the view from the battlements of Calascio's castle is spectacular; good enough perhaps to save this dying Italian hamlet.
Local officials have put restoring the ruins and attracting tourists at the heart of their bid to revive the village, which has won 20 million euros ($22 million) in EU post-pandemic funds.

An avalanche has buried a mountain hotel in the earthquake-hit region of Abruzzo, central Italy, with up to 30 people feared missing under the snow.
The civil protection agency said on Thursday morning that they were working to get rescue vehicles to the Hotel Rigopiano through roads covered in snow, joining initial rescue efforts overnight by alpine rescue teams.

An avalanche buried a mountain hotel in an earthquake-hit region of central Italy, leaving at least 30 people missing, authorities said on Jan. 19.

Four tremors hit Central Italy within an hour on Wednesday morning, the strongest measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale, according to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center.
Media reports suggest there were no victims of injured people as a result of the quakes.

Italy: New earthquake in Central Italy – The 5,3 tremor was felt in Rome
Buildings in Rome and Florence were shaken by a new earthquake and its many aftershocks, bringing back memories of the disaster that hit the country a few months ago, that killed approximately 300 people.
The quake hit around 10.25am local time (9.5am BST).
According to La Repubblica the quake was also felt in Lazio, Abruzzo and Marche.
6.7 earthquake hits central Italy (photos-videos)
Numerous buildings are said to have been destroyed across central Italy after a magnitude 6.6 earthquake, followed by aftershocks, rocked the peninsula on Sunday morning. No deaths have been reported, but Civil Protection says a number of people have been injured.
The US Geological Survey’s website puts the magnitude at 6.6.
