Rape victim to return to high school in Turkey's Diyarbakır after intervention of ministries

A woman who was forced into a religious marriage with her rapist at the age of 17 in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır will return to high school, following an intervention from the Education Ministry and the Family and Social Policies Ministry. 

Man detained after attacking Atatürk statue with hammer in Turkey's southeast

Police detained a man on Aug. 19 after he attacked a statue of Atatürk in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır, Doğan News Agency has reported. The 30-year-old man identified as İbrahim Yeşil climbed to the pedestal of the statue in the Şeyh Said Square at 2.30 p.m. and began to pound it with a hammer. His motive was not clear.

Körtik Hill offers thousands of artifacts

Excavations in Körtik Hill (Körtik Tepe) in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır's Bismil district have unearthed more than 30,000 artifacts in 17 years.

Within the scope of the work to rescue the artifacts that will remain underwater in the Ilısu Dam, excavations have been ongoing in Körtik Hill since 2000 under the leadership of the Diyarbakır Museum. 

Athletics saved Turkish girl from marriage at young age

The Turkish Athletic Federation's discovery of Meryem Bekmez's remarkable skills in athletics at the age of 12 saved her from getting married at a young age.

"She would have been married off like her sister, or would be working on the field," said her father Hacı Bekmez, had she not been "discovered" yet.

Opposition HDP starts 'justice watch' in Istanbul under tight security

The opposition Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) has started its "conscience and justice watch" in Istanbul's Kadıköy district with the participation of several lawmakers. 

The Kurdish issue-focused HDP started its watch on Aug. 1 in Kadıköy's Yoğurtçu Park after spending a week in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır.
