The United States and the European Union have both expressed their concern over the arrest of two British journalists in the southeastern province of Diyarbak?r, in line with international rights organizations.

The United States State Department has voiced its concern over the arrest of two British journalists and their translator in the southeastern province of Diyarbak?r, urging Turkey to revise its actions to match up with democratic values.

A Turkish court has remanded in custody two British journalists working for US-based media outlet VICE News on terror charges, in a case that has sparked fresh concern about press freedom.

A former head of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) youth branch was killed on Aug. 31 in a gun attack in the southeastern province of Diyarbak?r.

Unknown assailants attacked Yunus Koca, who was a pharmacist, in front of his drugstore in Diyarbak?r?s central Yeni?ehir district. Koca was badly wounded and rushed to hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Three police officers and a civilian have been killed and five policemen and one civilian wounded in attacks staged by suspected members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers? Party (PKK), while funerals for the killed police officers took place in their hometowns. 

International rights organizations have called on Turkish authorities to release three people working for VICE News, including two British journalists, who have been detained in Turkey's southeastern province of Diyarbak?r.

The journalists will appear in a Turkish court on Aug. 31, facing "unsubstantiated charges of terrorism," said a VICE News spokesperson.

Two police officers and a 13-year-old civilian child were killed and five police officers were wounded in three separate attacks conducted by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in two southeastern provinces on Aug. 30. 

Operations caused the deaths of three civilians and injured three others in the southeastern province of Diyarbak?r?s Silvan district on Aug. 18, during a period when a curfew had been declared, according to a human rights report prepared by local civil society organizations. 

Turkish police have detained two British journalists from Vice News for reporting from the predominantly Kurdish southeast without government accreditation, security sources said on Aug. 28.

Two soldiers have been killed in Turkey's southeast, as tension continues to run high, while the number of civilians killed in the latest clashes in the nearby province of ??rnak has risen to four.
