Swiss Train Hijacker Shot Dead by Police After Taking 15 Hostages

In a tense standoff that unfolded on a Swiss train, authorities have reported that a man armed with an ax and a knife held 15 passengers hostage for nearly four hours before being fatally shot by police. The incident occurred in the town of Essert-sous-Champvent on a train traveling between Baulmes and Yverdon-les-Bains in the Swiss canton of Vaud, near the French border.

Swiss Army Airlifts Water to Thirsty Cows in Drought-hit Pastures

ROSSINIERE, Switzerland - (Reuters) - Swiss army helicopters began airlifting water on Tuesday to thousands of thirsty cows who are suffering in a drought and heatwave that has hit much of Europe.

Large red plastic containers hung from the bottom of the Super Puma helicopters carried the water to farms in the Jura Mountains and Alpine foothills.

Switzerland orders community service for returned ISIL jihadist

Switzerland has ordered a returned recruit of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) to do 600 hours of community service and will not send him to prison, in the country's first sentencing of a foreign jihadist fighter.
      
Swiss Attorney General Michael Lauber's ruling went into effect this week, he told public broadcaster RTS late Dec. 10.

BELGRADE- A ceremony marking 100th anniversary of the beginning of work of Swiss professor and forensic scientist Archibald Reiss in Serbia was held at Topcider Park in downtown Belgrade on Thursday, during which Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic said that Reiss was a comrade and hero who endured the Great War alongside the Serbian army and people.
