Thousands march against planned gold mine in Kaz Mountains
Tens of thousands staged a large protest on the outskirts of a small town in the northwestern province of Çanakkale on Aug. 5. against what they say will be pollution from a foreign-owned gold mine project.
Assos excavations have been going on since 1800s
Assos, known today as the village of Behramkale in Ayvacık district in the northwestern province of Çanakkale, was one of the most important port cities in the Age of Antiquity. It is one of the few ancient cities in the world where excavations started in the 1800s - and have continued without interruption since 1981.

Dardanelles, Aegean island waters freed from 'ghost nets'
Some 17,750 square meters of abandoned fishing nets have been removed from Turkish waters around the Dardanelles Strait and the islands of Bozcaada (or Tenedos) and Gökçeada (or Imbros) since 2016 as part of an Agriculture and Forestry Ministry project.
Protected clam species transferred for bridge construction in Turkey's northwest
The protected fan mussel species Pinna nobilis, a large species of Mediterranean clam, has been transported to another area due to the construction of the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge in the northwestern province of Çanakkale.
