Traffic violations on the rise
Police data indicate a rise in dangerous traffic violations in Western Greece during the first half of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.
In the three regional units of Western Greece - Achaia, Ilia and Aetolia-Acarnania - a total of 21,681 dangerous violations were recorded, an increase from 21,171 in the previous year.

Man who killed ex-wife allegedly threatened to shoot their daughter
A 43-year-old man in western Greece who shot and killed his estranged wife with rifle before turning the gun on himself, is believed to have threatened to kill their 13-year-old daughter if she didn't return to the house, state-run broadcaster reported on Saturday.

A 42-year-old man in the west of the country shot and killed his 37-year-old estranged wife with rifle before turning the gun on himself.
The incident occurred in Amfilochia, in Aetolia-Acarnania regional unit, at around 4 a.m. Saturday.

PM visits Amfilochia energy storage construction site
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Wednesday visited the construction site where the Amfilochia pumped storage energy unit in northwestern Aetolia-Acarnania is being built, which is the biggest large-scale energy storage investment in Greece.
Fire in Astakos under control
A wildfire that broke out in Astakos, Etoloakarnania, on Monday was placed under control, the Hellenic Fire Service said.
A total of five vehicles and a 15-member crew remain on site to get the fire fully under control and guard against any possible rekindling. [AMNA]

Three suspects remanded over cocaine haul
Three out of four people arrested in connection with an international racket believed to have been smuggling large quantities of cocaine into Europe and Northwest Africa from the Caribbean island-country of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines were remanded in custody on Wednesday.

Property ownership declarations to resume
The collection of property ownership declarations will resume on November 19, starting with the southeastern Aegean islands of Karpathos and Kalymnos, the National Cadastre & Mapping Agency (Hellenic Cadastre) announced on Thursday.

One dead after car plunges into sea in Aitoloacarnania
A young man lost his life on Thursday when his car veered off a coastal road in Aitoloacarnania, western Greece, and plunged into the sea.
The accident occurred on the road linking the towns of Palairos and Mytikas in the early morning hours.
Firemen recovered the 18-year-old's body from the car but he was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital.
