Medical NGO Medecins Sans Frontieres said on Monday that it was "outraged" by the deaths of a child and a woman in a fire at the Moria migrant camp on the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos on Sunday that sparked a riot over dire conditions at the facility.

A woman and a child were reportedly killed in a fire at the identification and reception center of Moria on the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos on Sunday, the state-run Athens-Macedonian News Agency has said.

Protesting migrants have set fires inside and outside the Moria camp, on the island of Lesvos, demanding to be transferred into the mainland.

The migrants have clashed with police forces, a local website, lesvospost.gr reports.

Fire service officers have reached the site, trying to put the fires out.

Plans by the Citizens' Protection Ministry aimed at tackling a burgeoning new refugee crisis foresee the transfer of some 10,000 asylum seekers from overcrowded camps on the islands of the eastern Aegean to less cramped facilities on the mainland among other measures, Kathimerini understands.

Preventing deforestation should be key to fighting climate change as forests store carbon and provide oxygen and water, according to an official with a nonprofit environmental group.

Germany on Sept. 12 reaffirmed its commitment to the EU-Turkey refugee agreement, amid fears of another refugee wave due to the Syrian regime's attacks in the northwestern region of Idlib.       

A two-day conference is beginning in Istanbul on Sept. 12 to discuss the economic inclusion of young refugees in their host communities.         

Christos Christou, the head of the Greek branch of Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), or Doctors Without Borders, has been elected president of the international humanitarian agency.

In an announcement on Monday, MSF said Christou was elected in June and has already assumed his post.
