Streets in downtown Athens to close for icon procession

Streets in the downtown Athens neighborhood of Kolonaki and surrounding areas will be closed for several hours on Thursday afternoon for a religious procession.

The event marks the feast day of Saint Dionysius the Areopagite, Athens' patron saint, and involves a procession of his icon starting from the church of the same name on Skoufa Street.

Traffic closures planned on March 25 for Independence Day parade

Streets in downtown Athens will be closed to traffic on March 25 due to the school and military parades that will be held to celebrate Greece's Independence Day.

No traffic will be allowed on Vassilisis Sofias, Amalias, and Georgiou A Avenues, as well as Herodou Attikou, Panepistimiou, Stadiou, Filellinon, and Akadimias streets.

Ten people were arrested on Thursday morning after police officers removed squatters from a building housing the Olympia Municipal Music Theater Maria Callas in central Athens.

Investigation launched into police tow truck ramming

A prosecutor has ordered a preliminary investigation into an incident during Thursday's general strike in Athens where a police tow truck drove at high speed into dumpsters that were being wheeled into the middle of a street by protestors.

Videos of the incident, which occurred on Akadimias Street, quickly went viral.

Anarchists vandalize banks in show of solidarity for jailed robber

Groups of self-styled anarchists vandalized the facades of banks on Akadimias Street in central Athens on Monday during a protest to express solidarity with the jailed robber Tasos Theofilou.

Theofilou has been in prison since his arrest for an armed robbery on the island of Paros in 2012 and a final ruling on his case is expected in the coming days.
