New base for iconic ancient statue
The renowned Archaic statue "Kore of Thira," dating back to the 7th century BC, will receive a new support base for better stability and visibility. The statue will be featured in the exhibition "Kykladitisses: Untold Stories of women in the Cyclades," organized by the Cyclades Antiquities Ephorate and the Museum of Cycladic Art from December 11 to May 4, 2025.

Activists protest escalating Mideast crisis outside UK base in Cyprus
Pro-Palestinian campaigners protested at the gates of RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus on Sunday, accusing Britain of offering tacit support to Israel's ongoing operations in Gaza and elsewhere.
Eighteen lighthouses open to the public on Sunday
Eighteen lighthouses throughout Greece will open to the public on Sunday (August 18) as part of International Lighthouse Day.
The buildings will be accessible from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Activists protest at British base in Cyprus used in Yemen strikes
Pro-Palestinian activists protested at the gates of RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus on Sunday, angry that the British base was used as a launch pad for strikes against the Houthi militia in Yemen.

New heatwave rolls into Greece
A visitor at the Stoa of Attalos in the Ancient Agora of Athens fans herself as a new heatwave gripped Greece on Friday. The National Observatory's Meteo weather service reported that the highest temperatures on Friday were recorded in Akrotiri in Hania on Crete, which hit 42.6C, and in Thiva, at 42.2C.

Crete: Human head discovered in waste sorting facility
Police in Crete are investigating the discovery of a human head, likely to be that of a male aged in his 30s, at a waste sorting facility in Hania.
Upon discovery of the gruesome find, the unit, based in Akrotiri, shut down operations and called police.
A search then began in other waste containers in an effort to locate other body parts.

35-B fighters land in UK's Cyprus base for training, tests
Six F35-B Lightning warplanes, the UK's newest fighter, arrived Tuesday at a British air base on Cyprus for training and a systems test in the aircraft's first overseas deployment.
F-35 flying to Cyprus this summer
The first overseas flight for the Lightning Force's F-35 stealth fighters will take place in the eastern Mediterranean when they are expected to touch down in Akrotiri this summer.
