Three killed, seven injured in migrant smuggling car crash

Three people were killed and seven injured, one critically, when the vehicle they were traveling in veered off course on the Egnatia Highway outside Alexandroupoli in northern Greece.

The victims are said to be undocumented migrants who were being smuggled into Greece in an Italian-registered car, according to authorities.

KTEL bus struck by lightning near Alexandroupolis

A long-distance KTEL bus was completely burned on Saturday evening when it was hit by lightning outside the village of Monastiraki, located near the Greek-Turkish border, in the regional unit of Evros.

According to local website e-evros.gr, the bus was travelling from Alexandroupolis to Orestiada when it was hit by a lightning bolt.

Opposition leader urges Turkey to end 'illegal detention' of Greek soldiers

Greece's conservative opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Monday urged Turkey to end the "illegal detention" of two Greek servicemen arrested in early May for straying into Turkish territory during a border patrol.

"[Turkey] must end the illegal detention of our two officers here and now," Mitsotakis said during a visit to the northern Greek city of Alexandroupoli.

Maillis to shut down plants in Alexandroupoli and Italy

Manufacturing group Maillis on Thursday announced the closure of its plants at Alexandroupoli and in Italy, resulting in the loss of almost 100 jobs.

The shutdown of the two plants by the group controlled by US fund HIG is a part of its operating restructuring program aimed at the rationalization of production, the company's statement noted.
