Spanish police seized a record-breaking 13 tons of cocaine on October 14 in Algeciras, a southern Spanish port. The drugs were hidden within a shipment of bananas from Ecuador.

Spanish police have detained a man who carried out attacks with cold weapons in several churches in Algeciras in the south of the country, "El Pais" reported.

At the moment it is known that one person was killed and several were injured ("El Mundo" reports of four).

The man alleged to have stormed two Spanish churches with a machete, killing a verger and seriously wounding a priest, was slated for deportation but had no prior convictions, officials said Thursday.

The bloodshed, which took place on Wednesday evening in the southern port city of Algeciras, shocked Spain and left locals reeling.

A machete-wielding man killed a sexton and injured a priest at two Catholic churches in the city of Algeciras on Wednesday before being arrested, Spain's interior ministry said. Authorities are investigating the attacks as a possible act of terrorism.

The suspect is in the custody of Spain's National Police. The ministry did not identify him.
