Experts have issued a warning to individuals who came into contact with contaminated floodwaters on Poseidonos Avenue near Alimos in southern Athens on Christmas night.

On Christmas night, a section of Poseidonos Avenue near Alimos in southern Athens flooded with rainwater and sewage, forcing traffic to a standstill.

Officials blame illegal connections diverting rooftop and yard runoff into the sewer system, causing manhole covers to burst under pressure during heavy rain.

A lane of the Athens-Corinth highway was flooded on Thursday morning, causing delays for holidaymakers returning to the Greek capital after the Christmas break, as cold and wet weather spread across most parts of the country. 

Non-stop showers flooded roads and caused other problems in many parts of the country overnight and into Thursday morning.

Alimos is evolving into a hydroplane hub, as Athens is about to receive seaplanes for the first time after half a century.

The Hellenic Navy General Staff and the competent authorities for the maritime area of Alimos, southern Athens, have issued the necessary license for the operation of a hydroplane strip at the Athens Riviera.

Police arrested three teenagers, aged 16 and 17, in the southeastern suburban neighborhood of Ilioupoli on charges of robbery, resisting arrest and driving without a license. A fourth 16-year-old was arrested solely for resisting arrest.
