Anchovy

Turkey?s fishing industry has been shrinking gradually since 2011 due to a decrease in fishing activities, although there has been an increase in fish breeding, according to a note published by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜ?K) on July 7. 

?Hamsi? is a way of life for Black Sea people. Known as the European anchovy, Engraulis encrasicolus to be precise, it is the staple protein during winter months for all of the people living near the shores of the Black Sea coast in Turkey.

Fishermen across Turkey sailed out to sea on Sept. 1 to mark the end of the seasonal fishing ban, reintroducing the mass arrival of fish to local markets.
