LA Zoo hatches first-ever perentie lizards
Two new baby lizards have hatched at the Los Angeles Zoo, the first of their species to be bred there, zoo officials said on Dec. 19.
Perentie lizards, or Varanus giganteus, are native to Australia and one of the world's largest lizards, dwarfed only by the Komodo dragon and a few others.

The little girl, who was playing on the family farm in Trøndelag, central Norway, when the eagle swooped down on her, needed stitches on the back of her head and suffered scratches on her face from the bird’s talons, her father told the public broadcaster NRK.

According to experts, it was clearly a juvenile great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias).

Raptors nesting again at devastated Dadia forest
The cinereous vulture is back at the Dadia forest in northeastern Greece. So are other big birds, such as the golden and white-tailed eagles.
The forest was devastated in August and September 2023 by a wildfire that burned about 73,000 hectares (730 square kilometers or 282 square miles). About half the forest area is estimated to have been burned.
