Police gained control of an Ecuador prison on Sept. 30 where rioting has left at least 118 inmates dead, some of them decapitated, as rival drug gangs went to war armed with guns and grenades.

Another 86 inmates were wounded, six of them critically, according to Ecuador's prisons authority, in one of the deadliest prison battles in South American history.

At least 57 prisoners were killed by other inmates during clashes between organized crime groups in the Altamira prison in northern Brazil on July 29 with 16 of the victims being decapitated, according to prison officials.

Two fugitives who escaped from a prison in western Turkey have been detained after they asked security forces for directions. 

Police stormed a riot-torn prison in Bolivia March 14, killing six inmates in an operation that also left two dozen people injured, authorities said.

At least 49 inmates were killed in a Mexican prison brawl on Feb. 11 as rival groups fought with bats, sticks and blades and ignited a fire in the overcrowded penitentiary, authorities said.
