Greek authorities are on high alert due to high winds blowing Saturday across the country. In the prefecture of Laconia in the Peloponnese, firefighters have managed to contain most of the fire front but are still operating to extinguish smaller spots around the region. 130 firefighters and 51 vehicles started their operations at the break of dawn.

Alt. Finance Minister Nadia Valavani issued a decision concerning the government’s plans for Hellenikon International Airport at the Agios Kosmas Seafront. Contrary to dreams for the 12-acred site to be turned into the biggest park in Europe, the airport will be used to serve the countries waste management needs.

The prospects for one of Greece?s few privatization projects, the development of the old Athens Airport plot at Elliniko, appeared unclear Wednesday, after Alternate Finance Minister Nadia Valavani said a small portion of the plot would be set aside to create waste management facilities for four municipalities.

The mayor of Argyroupoli-Elliniko, where a 13-year-old boy lost his life at a fairground, has been asked to explain the municipality’s actions as part of an administrative investigation into the incident that is separate from the judicial probe that has led to four people being charged with felonies.
