The UEFA Champions League final game that Istanbul hosted at the weekend has given a huge boost to the city's hotels and marks "a milestone" for the local tourism industry, says Müberra Eresin, the president of the Hotel Association of Türkiye (TÜROB).

Gul said that 15,000 security officers have been deployed for the match on Saturday, the biggest football event in the European club calendar.

The final will be played in Istanbul's Ataturk Olympic Stadium, where 70,000 fans from all over Europe will attend the game as tens of millions watch on television or online.

The tourism sector in Istanbul is preparing for the UEFA Champions League Final to be played at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium on June 10, with expections that about 50,000 fans will arrive in the city.

Hoteliers who reported mediocre earnings during April and May, the peak months for Istanbul tourism, due to the deadly Feb. 6 quakes, are locked on the UEFA Champions League Final.

The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) has submitted a final bid to UEFA to host the 2028 or 2032 editions of the European Football Championships.

"UEFA today received three bid dossiers from member national associations interested in hosting the 2028 and 2032 European Championships," the European football's governing body announced on April 12.

The Champions League final will be held in Istanbul on May 29 as planned despite a coronavirus surge in Turkey which has led to the country announcing a third lockdown, UEFA told AFP on April 30. 

Turkey's World Cup qualifiers match against Latvia in Istanbul will be played with 15% fans in the stadium, the Turkish Football Federation announced March 28.

All health protocols determined by UEFA and Turkish authorities will be followed with fans requiring the country's coronavirus contact tracing HES code to enter the stadium, it added.

Fifteen years after the "Miracle of Istanbul" that cemented Steven Gerrard's status as a Liverpool legend, the Turkish metropolis was supposed to host its second Champions League final on May 30. But that was before the coronavirus pandemic wreaked worldwide havoc.

The 2020 UEFA Champions League Final will be played at Istanbul's Atatürk Olympic Stadium, which has a 76,092-seat capacity, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced on May 24.
