Former co-chairs of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ, have been handed substantial prison sentences in the case stemming from events dating back to the 2014 protests that erupted into deadly clashes in eastern Türkiye.

A court on Dec. 21 sentenced Leyla Güven, a former deputy from the opposition Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) to over 22 years in prison for being a member of an armed terrorist group and making propaganda for it twice.

The 9th Heavy Penal Court in southeastern Diyarbakir province handed Güven 22 years and three months in prison and issued an arrest warrant for her.

How could such a thing happen? It is difficult to understand and even more difficult to accept.
Days have passed since the inhumane demonstration of barbarism and primitivism, which planted such a horrible seed for the future of this country.

What has been happening in Turkey recently is no longer a matter of political criticism and disagreement, it is now simply a matter of despair and sorrow. It is beyond politics. It is no longer a matter of rights and wrongs but a matter of the survival of sanity and emotional wellbeing, which are under serious threat. We should acknowledge that this is beyond politics. 

Turkish Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu's picture with one of the attackers of the funeral of the jailed Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) lawmaker Aysel Tuğluk's mother has stirred debate. The minister responded by saying he did not know the person he posed with was among the suspects.
