Nearly 34,000 birds ringed in 2021

Turkish authorities registered and ringed 33,817 birds from 178 species in 2021, according to a report released by the country's Agriculture and Forestry Ministry.

Around 28,723 of the birds were ringed at local stations in the country, while 4,836 of them were ringed within the scope of scientific research projects.

Some 289 bird species observed in Turkey this year

A total of 289 bird species have been reported in Turkey, according to an official statement on May 13.

This ranks Turkey 31st among 191 countries, said the General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks in a statement released on World Migratory Bird Day, observed each year on the second weekend of May.

Birds get shelter from biting cold in Turkey’s east

The harsh winters in eastern Turkey can prove to be a bane for the toughest of creatures.

The season is particularly arduous for birds, who are left without shelter as the freezing cold devours all foliage.

However, a community in the province of Kars has banded together to come up with a possible solution, making and putting up small wooden birdhouses around their village.

Birdhouses in Safranbolu

Birdhouses in the likeness of the district's historic houses have been made in Karabük's Safranbolu district. The district had made cat houses and now they have made birdhouses to protect birds from bad weather conditions, Safranbolu District Governor Fatih Ürkmezer has said.
