A 30-year-old man who has allegedly confessed to deliberately setting several fires - some of them extremely destructive - in different parts of Messinia in the southwestern Peloponnese was remanded in custody on Monday.

Artists to mark east Attica fire anniversary

Abandoned infant perishes in apartment fire
A 13-month-old girl died in a blaze that broke out early Thursday morning in an apartment in the seaside suburb of Varkiza, southwestern Attica.
The baby girl was discovered by firemen who entered the third-floor apartment on Eridos Street after being alerted to the blaze by local residents.
She was immediately transferred to hospital where doctors confirmed her death.

Expert says there was time to evacuate Mati
A study presented on Wednesday on eastern Attica's deadly wildfires in July found that the hour and a half between when the blaze started on the slopes of Mount Penteli and when it reached Mati on the coast was ample to order the residents of the seaside town to go down to the seashore in an orderly manner.

Divers pull body out of water in fire-ravaged east Attica
Greek coast guard officials with the help of divers on Monday pulled an unidentified body out of the water near Kokkino Limanaki in east Attica, an area ravaged by a deadly blaze a week ago.
According to the coast guard, the body was transferred to the port of Rafina.
Large fire breaks out in northern Athens suburb park
More than 20 firemen, a water-dumping airplane and two helicopters were trying to put out a blaze in a park in the middle of a residential part of northern Athens on Friday afternoon.
Man burns to death in Piraeus apartment
Fire fighters found a man around 60 years old dead in Piraeus, as they fought a blaze in a first-floor apartment on Friday afternoon.
The fire started under unknown circumstances at a flat on Fillelinon Street, in central Piraeus.
