A newly discovered whale that lived nearly 40 million years ago could be the heaviest animal to have ever lived, based on a partial skeleton found in Peru, scientists said on Aug. 2.

The modern blue whale has long been considered the largest and heaviest animal ever, beating out all the giant dinosaurs of the distant past.

A 14-meter-long fin whale, which has washed up on the shore of the southern province of Mersin, was moved on to the shore after a four-hour operation on May 13.

The dead body of the whale was transferred to Mersin University. Its skeleton will be exhibited in the city's Sea Museum.

A 12-metre fin whale was sighted near the port of the Greek island of Syros on Wednesday. Locals and tourists were stunned when the giant mammal was spotted swimming near a tourist yacht just outside the island’s port on. The crew of the vessel quickly picked up a camera and captured the moment.
